On behalf of the Executive of the NZ Lactation Consultants Association, I have great pleasure in inviting you to attend this 2018 NZLCA Walking Tour: From Our Shoes To Their Shoes.

 Join me in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch as leaders and change-makers help us to work towards our national and international IBCLC goal of “world health transformed through breastfeeding and skilled lactation care”.

 For those not used to the Walking Tour concept, we bring the speakers to a venue near you, repeating it three times over one week. That means lower travel and accommodation costs for many of you and more importantly that many more breastfeeding supporters will be able to attend.

 One of the greatest advantages of attending NZLCA education events is gathering with other breastfeeding supporters to share ideas and developments. This is a unique opportunity to hear about new initiatives, projects in progress, current research findings and more. Experts in their respective fields, will present but with a distinct request to focus from the perspective of mothers – what are their goals; what do they need from us: are we meeting those needs?

 For those who are able to travel to Auckland we are offering some pre-conference events” Some of you may have had the good fortune to attend management seminars facilitated by Linda Hutchings. Linda’s work is superb and we are very lucky to have her for one afternoon before she travels overseas. We’ll tell you more about what’s on offer as we email you over the next few months. Keep the date free. In addition, we also invite you to attend our AGM at 5.15 pm on Tuesday 20 February. Book soon for the 20th and 21st in Auckland; the 23rd in Wellington or 24th in Christchurch.

Programme Focus

 The aim of this event is to try to put ourselves in others’ shoes – to focus on how we can work with mothers and listen to what they want; how they define success (feeding, parenting etc), rather than prescribed expectations of what mothers should do to conform to our expectations/requirements. We would particularly like to challenge health professionals to think about how parents reach their decisions, and how we might encourage them to voice their own needs and goals.

 The objectives of the Tour are:

 ·     To challenge participants to identify the goals of mothers/babies/families and what they actually want/need

·     To balance evidence-based practice with the goals of mothers/whaanau

·     To facilitate clinical strategies when working in collaboration with other health professionals 

·     To focus on complex breastfeeding difficulties beyond simple positioning and latching issues

·     To network with other breastfeeding supporters to share ideas and developments

 NZLCA will refund registration fees if one full week's notice of cancellation is given, provided that you notify NZLCA by email:  No refund will be provided to those who do not attend and fail to notify NZLCA in advance.

In such circumstances, every effort will be made to contact participants by email and/or phone in good time, and a full refund of registration fees will be offered but NZLCA will accept no further liability.
